The Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus (CMP) expresses its sincere thanks to the Republic of Cyprus for its donation of โ‚ฌ175,000 made yesterday.

In a press release, CMP notes that this donation brings the Republic of Cyprusโ€™ financial assistance to CMP to a total of โ‚ฌ3,110,700 since 2005. The Republic of Cyprus is the largest single donor country.

It adds that this contribution to the CMP Project on the Exhumation, Identification and Return of Remains of Missing Persons in Cyprus will support the Committeeโ€™s goal of identifying and returning as many remains of missing individuals as possible to bring an end to the uncertainty which has affected so many families for so many years.

So far, 992 missing persons from both communities have been identified and returned to their families for dignified burials, CMP says, adding that it relies on donor support to alleviate the suffering of the concerned families.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied its northern third. Since then, the fate of hundreds of people remains unknown.

A Committee on Missing Persons has been established, upon agreement between the leaders of the two communities, with the scope of exhuming, identifying and returning the remains of missing persons to their relatives.
