The new Ambassador of Cyprus in Serbia, Demetrios A. Theofylaktou, has expressed Nicosia`s appreciation for Belgrade’s long-standing  steadfast support for efforts to reach a just and viable settlement of the Cyprus problem, on the basis of the international law and the relevant UN Security resolutions.

Theophylaktou presented on Friday his credentials to the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, who on his part thanked Cyprus for its firm support of his country, expressing the appreciation of the government and the people of Serbia about Cyprus` position with regard to the issue of Kosovo, as well as about the consistent support of Nicosia to the prospect of Serbia`s accession to the EU.

According to a PIO press release, Ambassador Theofylaktou conveyed the warm greetings of the President of Cyprus, Nicos Anastasiades, to the Serbian President, and underlined the great importance which Cyprus attributes to the ongoing development of the bilateral relations with Serbia, adding that he will work tirelessly for the further enhancement of the already traditional close and friendly relations between the two countries.

President Vučić asked the Ambassador to convey his personal wishes and warm greetings to President Anastasiades and expressed hope that conditions will soon allow him to host the Cypriot President in Belgrade for a meeting of the High Level Cooperation Council between Serbia and Cyprus, with a view to further enhancing the two countries` cooperation.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. The latest UN backed round of talks took place in 2017, in the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana, but failed to yield any results.
