The speech the Chinese President Xi Jinpin made at the grand ceremony held in Beijing on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China is truly noteworthy because it reflected, without exaggerating, the great strides made by China in the last century and the great improvements made in the life of its 1.4 billion inhabitants.

Indeed, the Chinese people should feel pride for their achievements, as with many sacrifices over the years they managed to change their country from a place of absolute property to a place of a moderately prosperous society in all respects. At the same time, the Chinese people, under the leadership of the CPC won a number of hard fought battles and now China is a World power in all its manifestations, economic, military, cultural and scientific achievements, as well as for its honest endeavors to preserve international order, and ย help solve some of the long festering political problems in the world.

We, as Cypriots, feel grateful for the consistent support China gave our country in our hours of need and are greatly encouraged and heartened by Xiโ€™s solemn promise that theChinese people will never allow foreign forces to bully, oppress and subjugate people and that โ€œanyone who would attempt to do so will find themselves on a collision course with a great wall of steel forged by over 1.4 billion Chinese people.”

Furthermore, it should be pointed out that China has not tried to exploit other peoples, as the colonial powers did in the past centuries, but makes a positive contribution to global development, and is helping countries develop their infrastructure, particularly through the Belt and Road Initiative. Finally, it is truly inspiring for us to hear the leader of one of the most important powers in the world to speak about his dream of great national rejuvenation.
