The agreement on the new Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) after 2020, reached on 28 June 2021, in the framework of the work of the EU Agriculture Council in Luxembourg, is the largest reform in the agricultural sector since 1990, says the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment Costas Kadis, adding that this is an Agreement that ensures that the future CAP will work for the benefit of Europe, but also for the benefit of the rural world in Cyprus.

In a written statement, the Minister of Agriculture notes that after months of intensive consultations between the EU Member States and at the level of institutions, “we have before us a balanced Agreement that paves the way for a greener, fairer and more flexible CAP which is fully in line with the wider EU policies and in particular the European Green Agreement and the Farm to Fork Policy.”

“The new CAP supports the transition to a greener and climate-friendly agriculture, while ensuring the competitiveness of farmers. From January 2023 and for a period of five years the new CAP, among other things, will ensure a fairer distribution of support, especially to small and medium-sized family farms, which are the majority of farmers in Cyprus, and will offer new schemes for young farmers “, he adds.

As announced the total amount to be distributed in Cyprus for the period 2023-2027 amounts to 380 million euros, to which the national contribution of 86 million euros will be added.

It should be noted that during the transitional period 2021-2022, another 202 million euros will be distributed to the rural world in total through the CAP.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment will immediately proceed with the completion of the preparation of the National Strategic Plan and the support programs for farmers, after the completion of the relevant consultation with the agricultural movement and all stakeholders, with the aim to timely inform the agriculture world in order to be properly prepared for the Plan’s maximum utilization.
