On January 28, 2022, Ambassador Liu Yantao met via video with President of the Open University of Cyprus Professor Petros Pashiardis. The two sides had an in-depth and friendly exchange of views on Open University cooperation, cultural exchanges and mutual learning.

Ambassador Liu agreed to professor Pashiardis’s proposal on cooperation with the Open University of China, saying that both universities of the country have made many achievements in joint education and inter-university cooperation. During the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Cyprus in last year, leaders of both sides reached important consensus on deepening especially in the field of higher education

Standing at a new starting point of China-Cyprus strategic partnership, there is great potential for educational cooperation between the two countries. It is hoped that the open universities on both sides will sign a memorandum of understanding on cooperation at an early date and continue to deepen cooperation in teaching, research and exchange students. At the same time, educational cooperation can also promote mutual learning among civilizations and cultural exchange. It is hoped that THE Open University of Cyprus will promote mutual appreciation and learning between Chinese and Greek cultures and further understanding between China and Cyprus, as well as China and Europe.

Professor Pashiardis’s expressed that the Open University of Cyprus is promoting its internationalization strategy and to deepen all-round cooperation with the Open University of China to make positive contributions into strengthening cultural exchanges between the two countries by introducing and spreading Chinese culture to Europe through relevant courses offered at the institution.
