On March 3, 2022, Minjiang University of China and European University of Cyprus jointly hosted the China-Cyprus Digital Economy Online Summit with the theme of “Digital Transformation — Higher Education Cooperation Practice”. Ambassador Liu Yantao attended and addressed the opening ceremony of the Forum. Mr. Kokinos, Vice Minister of Innovation and Digital, Andreas, President of European University, Mr. Wang Zonghua, President of Minjiang University, and more than ten experts in the field of digital economy from both countries attended the forum.

Ambassador Liu said that the International School of Digital Economy, jointly established by Minjiang University and European University last year, is an ambitious and pioneering project that has set a new milestone in China-Cyprus relations and educational cooperation. Digital transformation is vital to our future. COVID-19 has changed the way we live, but also the way we think and interact with the world. Not long ago, China successfully hosted the Beijing Winter Olympics, which was the most digitized event in Olympic history. It set a new digital standard for the Centennial Olympic Games and proved how digital can help us become higher, faster, stronger and more united.

Ambassador Liu stressed that in the digital age, no man is an island, and no country can survive completely isolated from the world. China has been working with Cyprus and many other countries to build the Digital Silk Road. President Xi Jinping has also put forward a global Development initiative covering eight key areas, including the digital economy. As strategic partners, China and Cyprus  should further enhance cooperation in the field of digital transformation and inject stronger impetus into economic growth and social progress of the two countries. It is hoped that young students of the two countries will strive to master digital knowledge and skills and jointly create a digital future that is open, inclusive, equal and united.

In his address, Deputy Minister Kokinos said the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of digital technology and scientific and technological innovation. The establishment of the International Digital Economy School of the two universities provides an important platform for promoting dialogue, exchanges and cooperation in the digital field between China and Cyprus Digital transformation is a global challenge and of great significance to Cyprus ‘s economic and social development. The Cypriot government has been increasing input in recent years to build a knowledge-based economy and an innovative society. It is hoped that the two countries will strengthen exchanges through platforms such as the International Digital Economy Academy and conduct more cooperation in the application of new technologies, sustainable development and enhancing international competitiveness.

After the opening ceremony, experts and scholars from the two countries had full exchanges and discussions on computer engineering, electronic engineering, graphic design, marketing and digital communication and other professional topics.
