Welcome address on behalf of the President of Cyprus โ€“ India Cultural Association on 29 January 2020 at Semeli Hotel

On behalf of the President of the Cyprus -India Cultural Association Mr Chris Michael, I wish to thank you all for your presence in this reception organised by the Association in order to welcome the new High Commissioner of India Mrs Madhumita Hazarika Bhagat and wish her every success in her task of promoting further the friendly relations between Cyprus and India.

India was one of the first countries with which the young Republic of Cyprus established diplomatic relations, which over the years developed into a strong relationship and cooperation in context of the Non-aligned Movement, in which the two states and their leaders played a leading role.

It is true that since Cyprus Independence, the Republic of Cyprus has maintained excellent diplomatic and political relations with the great country of India, but we all feel that it is high time that our economic, cultural and business relations reflect the high level of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The Indian military has participated in the UN Peace Keeping operations in Cyprus on numerous occasions, while three Indian Generals have served as Commanders of (UNFICYP), something for which the people of Cyprus feel grateful.

India has consistently supported and voted for a peaceful resolution of the Cyprus dispute and always stood by the side of Cyprus in debates of the Cyprus question at the United Nations. For its part, Cyprus supports the Indiaโ€“United States Civil Nuclear Agreement, and also supports India within the Nuclear Suppliers Group and the International Atomic Energy Agency.

We have no doubt that the new High Commissioner will do her utmost to promote further the development of cooperation between the two countries in the sectors of, bilateral trade, pharmaceuticals, information technology, construction, as well as in the cultural and many other fields, while Cyprus will be more actively supporting Indiaโ€™s positions in the European Union and other fora.

Concluding, let me express on behalf of all the members of the Cyprus-India Cultural Association our sincere wishes for every success in the work of Mrs Madhumita Hazarika Bhagat and we are confident that she will work hard to further strengthen the relations between India and Cyprus in all fields.
