Commission mobilises rescEU system for Cyprus, Greece sending planes

The European Commission has mobilised the rescEU system which tackles natural disasters to Cyprus after huge fires broke out in Limassol district and spread to Larnaca communities on Saturday.

In a message on Twitter, Janez Lenacic, European Commissioner for Crisis Management, in charge of European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid. European Emergency Response Coordinator said that “after a huge fire broke out in #Cyprus Limassol district, our Emergency and Response Coordination Centre invited #Greece & #Italy to mobilise the #rescEU aerial firefighting capacity. plane will arrive still tonight.”

We remain, she added, “in close contact with authorities.”

Meanwhile Deputy Citizensโ€™ Protection Minister Nikos Hardalias said Greece is sending two Canadair CL-415  at the order of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

He said that he contacted Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulides earlier Saturday to inform him about the assistance.
Hardalias pledged Greece`s support, noting “Greece is always standing by Cyprus which is being tried  by this huge fire”.
