On November 11, 2020, His Excellency LIU Yantao, Ambassador of China to Cyprus had a virtual meeting with Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Cyprus Ms. Elizabeth Spehar. The two sides exchanged views on the prospects of the Cyprus Problem and work of UNFICYP.

Ambassador Liu said that China has been closely following the situation in Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean. China commends the work of UNFICYP and the UN Office of the Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Cyprus in safeguarding peace and stability in Cyprus and encouraging relevant parties to move towards the same goal. As one of the Permanent Members of the UN Security Council, China will remain supportive of the UN’s key role in resolving the Cyprus Problem, an early resumption of the peace talks, as well as a comprehensive, just and lasting resolution of the Cyprus Problem on the basis of relevant UN resolutions.

SRSG Spehar congratulated Ambassador Liu on assuming his new duty and briefed Ambassador Liu of the latest developments in Cyprus and the Cyprus Problem. SRSG Spehar spoke highly of the important and constructive role China has played in resolving the Cyprus Problem and looked forward to China’s continued contribution to the peace process in Cyprus.
