On April 14, 2022, Chinese Ambassador to Cyprus Liu Yantao met with Mr. Stewart, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General to Cyprus at request and exchanged views on the Cyprus issue and the Russia-Ukraine situation.

Stewart gave a comprehensive overview of the major work he has done since assuming the post of Special Representative and the latest progress of the Cyprus issue. He highly appreciated The important and constructive role China has played on the Cyprus issue for a long time and spoke highly of China’s excellent performance in Cyprus and its police officers. He looked forward to China’s continued contribution of wisdom and strength to Cyprus peace process.

Ambassador Liu spoke highly of Stuart’s efforts to maintain peace and stability in Cyprus and enhance exchanges, cooperation and trust building between the Greek and Turkish communities, reiterating the Principled position of the Chinese government on the Cypriot issue. He stressed that China, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, will continue to support the UN in playing a key role on the Cypriot issue and push for a comprehensive, just and lasting settlement of the issue on the basis of relevant SECURITY Council resolutions and within the framework of the biconzor federalism.
