On March 31, 2022, Ambassador Liu Yantao met with Secretary General for European Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus, Mr. Tolmaku. The two sides had in-depth and friendly exchanges on china-eu relations, China-cyprus relations, the situation in Ukraine and other topics of common interest.

Ambassador Liu first congratulated Special on his appointment as Secretary-General for European Affairs, saying that both China and Europe are important forces in international relations and it is of great significance to further strengthen china-eu comprehensive strategic partnership. The 23rd China-Eu Summit will be held soon. Both sides look forward to the goal of enhancing communication, expanding consensus, deepening cooperation and properly managing differences. China and Cyprus established a strategic partnership at the end of 2021. It is hoped that Cyprus as a member of the European Union, will continue to promote mutual trust, exchanges and cooperation between China and Europe. Ambassador Liu elaborated on China’s position on the Ukrainian issue and China’s efforts to promote peace talks. He stressed that the international community should give priority to regional peace and stability and general security, urge Russia and Ukraine to maintain the momentum of negotiations, talk about results and peace, prevent large-scale humanitarian crisis and effectively protect the safety of civilians.

Serbia welcomes the meeting and looks forward to bringing Eu-China relations back to the right track. He highly appreciated the establishment of strategic partnership between China and Cyprus and introduced Serbia’s position on the Ukrainian issue. He stressed that Cyprus also hopes that Russia and Ukraine could solve their disputes through diplomatic negotiations, end the conflict as soon as possible and restore regional peace and stability.
