Ambassador Liu Yantao met with Mr. Christofides, Director of Energy and Marine Policy Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Mr. Hadjiargyrou, Director of Schengen Consular Affairs and Crisis Management Directorate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, from November 23rd to 24th, 2020. They had a friendly exchange on Sino-Cypriot relations, the Cyprus issue, and the joint fight against the COVID-19 epidemic.
The Cypriot officials warmly welcome Ambassador Liu to his new post in Cyprus, positively appreciate the all-round improvement of the relations between Cyprus and China, sincerely thank China for its objective and fair stance on the Cyprus issue and the disputes in the Eastern Mediterranean region, as well as the timely provision of anti-epidemic supplies to Cyprus. They look forward to further deepening exchanges and cooperation in politics, economy, trade and culture in the light of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 2021, so as to give further impetus to the development of bilateral relations.ใใ
Ambassador Liu spoke highly of the traditional friendship between China and Cyprus and the close cooperation in bilateral and multilateral fields, reiterated the Chinese government’s principled position on the Cyprus issue and firmly supported the efforts of the Cypriot side to safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity. Ambassador Liu commended the establishment of a joint epidemic prevention and control mechanism between the Cypriot Foreign Ministry and the Chinese Embassy, as well as the implementation of remote prevention and control measures in cooperation with China, and stressed that China is willing to continue to provide assistance to Cyprus in the prevention and control of the epidemic to the best of its ability, in order to contribute to the faster and better development of relations between the two countries.ใ
